If you're into keto, whether that’s because you’re trying to achieve your weight goal or improve your blood sugar levels and overall health, this lifestyle change could be the perfect match for you!

But let’s face it: although the keto diet is extremely healthy and beneficial for your health, following a keto diet can be really hard, especially when you have such a big sweet tooth! No sugar, carbs, fruit, or cereal is allowed.

If you’ve been on this journey for a while now, then there must be some desserts you can’t help missing. And it’s OK! We all have a sweet guilty pleasure that makes us wonder why  on earth did we even choose this path in the first place?

Luckily, this time we have something you can indulge in when your sweet tooth kicks in: our Keto Dulce de Leche. But that’s not all. We’ve turned an Argentinian award-winning dessert (Chocotorta) into a healthy keto-friendly sweet that will have you head over heels! But first…

What is "Dulce de leche"?

Even if you’ve never set  foot on any Central or South American land, it’s quite possible you’ve already tried this delicacy!

Dulce de leche, translated as “milk’s sweet" or "milk candy," is a confection made by slowly cooking milk with sugar until it reaches the consistency of soft caramel. The process may take more than 4 hours, but the results are completely worth it!

Also known as “cajeta”, “manjar” or “arequipe” in Mexico and Central America, its popularity has spread among Latin America and even some European countries like France, Spain, and Portugal. In fact, it's become so widespread that some people believe it originated there instead. But actually, it was never invented; it was discovered…

Fun fact: It was a distracted woman who gave us the gift of dulce de leche! Back in 1829, in Argentina, dulce de leche was discovered completely by accident by General Manuel de Rosas’ maid, who forgot she had left the milk and sugar on the stove when preparing some desserts.

Want to learn yet another fun fact? In places like Argentina and Uruguay, where it’s the most popular, you can literally find dulce de leche EVERYWHERE! People put it in pastries, cakes, cookies, ice cream, and even bread.

Nutella? PB and jelly? There’s no room for anything else when you have dulce de leche in your pantry!

Dulce de leche vs. caramel

When it comes to tastes, there isn’t much to be said. Everyone has their preferences, and the kitchen is no exception! For us Americans, caramel and dulce de leche are practically the same… But don’t be fooled! We don't want to be biased, but dulce de leche is way better.

Even though they're both made from caramelized sugar (and sometimes other ingredients), the main difference is how each is prepared. Dulce de leche is a syrup made from sweetened milk that's been cooked for a long time, whereas caramel is just melted and boiled sugar.
